Handwriting for Second Graders
Children must write legibly so it can be read easily. They need to form letters correctly, using good spacing between words. These are courtesies to our readers. Children also need to become efficient writers so they don't get bogged down by having to think about each letter ("How does that go?" or "Where do I start?"). This is called “automaticity”.
Many children come to school forming letters incorrectly, often "piecing" them together . These bad habits are hard to break and you can help by making sure that your child forms letters rather than “drawing” letters.
Once children have developed correct ways to form letters ("from the top and down"), they can become more efficient and handwriting becomes a tool to get thoughts across and the writing process can begin!
Included here is a link to charts showing correct formations (beginning at the top) as well as correct pencil grasp. Please note how "c", "a" and "d" are formed (and related to other letters in their formations).
Your assistance in supporting your child in the development of good handwriting skills will be so helpful...for a lifetime!
